The ukulele is a fun instrument. It’s popular too. Round our way, you could throw one and probably end up hitting a member of a ukulele band. But, it can be, as someone once remarked ‘serious fun.’ In my band, The Surrey Ukeaholics (do google or look on Facebook), we play pop hits from the 60s onwards and people love us. But, we can also balladise Springsteen’s Dancing in the Dark and get people thinking. In another incarnation of mine, the duo Watson Hall (tagline, ‘inappropriate songs for the ukulele played inappropriately’), we have a repertoire that includes Radiohead and John Dowland.

My goal was to pick a song that seems an obvious choice for a simple instrument and then tackle it in a way that is far from obvious. The challenge here is to remain faithful to the material while subverting the instrument. As a faithful disciple of the Gods of Prog (shhhh), I decided that the best way was to take the cheap, pick up, take anywhere, play anywhere, most cheerful of instruments and drench it in effects (yeah, there’s not many ukulele players with pedal boards). I’ll say no more than to affirm that this is all ukuleles: bass, tenor, soprano and sopranino.
