As my work on four other songs of this tribute album had been finalized, there still seemed to be enough time left for yet another contribution.

There are not a lot of PH songs that I would dare to sing, let alone in public, but with ‘Black Box’ counting to one of my all time favorite albums and ‘The Spirit’ being a relatively short song and somewhat within my vocal range, I decided to give it a go.

I have never felt to be very convincing at singing and certainly not singing rock music.

When it came to laying down the vocal track, I went full throttle only to realize that my voice disappeared within five minutes into the recording session. I felt pretty much stranded but had no other option than to just continue singing my guts out.

It sounded terrible. Miraculously though after twenty or so minutes the words started to come out less airy and gain back some their pitch while maintaining some of that snarling and growling sound coming from the throat.

And as the song actually says, it is the energy of the delivery itself that counts — The Spirit survives.

And I hope it did.
